To Blog or Not to Blog? I'm Facebooked with that question.
BLOG. "Big Long Ol' Gripe." (Well, that's what I used to think.) "Why would anyone want to blog?" I asked myself that question all the time. "These people that write these blogs have absolutely no credibility. They remind me of the cast of The Real World: San Francisco - always sitting around, laying around, talking, whining, analyzing, wha-wha-wha!" Again, it was just another thought that crossed my mind when hearing someone reference the "Blogisphere". Just hearing about someone’s blog made me kind of want to do the Billy Madison thing when he was drunk standing at the doorstep of his girlfriend’s house... "Talky, Talky, Talky...No more Talky."
So after all that here's the obvious question...Why would I want to start a BLOG?
The short answer... I don't have a radio show. Like anyone would listen anyway - and let's not forget, you apparently need not have credibility to blog.
The long answer... I was on Facebook one day checking the Top News and Most Recent News Feeds when I came across a post from my wife. This is a somewhat typical post from her that included little effort, little thought, little intrigue, and little provocation. The post was this, "Coffeeeeeeeeeee!!" (That's Coffee with eleven e's and two exclamation points.) This post didn't generate a ton of response, but responses were posted nonetheless. And it is the responses that led me to wonder, "What is Facebook for anyway?"
Now I understand that Facebook simply asks for you to share, "What's on your mind?" I'm not opposed to that or Coffee itself. I also understand that from time to time we are compelled just to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind. I've been known to fill up a friend’s page with OH SHAWN! from time to time. (Inside Joke.) What I really found interesting was comparing what was on her mind at that moment and the responses generated from that post to what was on my mind at that moment and the response to my post.
So what did I post? I'm glad you asked. (You're getting good at this.) Well here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fSvyv0urTE
It's a video that shows a woman who (is a member of the Muslim Students Association) basically pledges allegiance to Hamas (An Islamic Movement that believes fanatically in the "dream" that "there is no place for the state of Israel".)
So now you've seen the differences in what was on our minds at that moment. Next up... Comments.
I'm not going to quote the comments nor who they were from, but let it be known that the amount of comments were approximately 4 to 1, hers to mine. (Six to one if you include her post from the very next morning which read, "What's on my mind? Same thing as yesterday......Coffeeeeeeeeeee!!")
So what did I expect, an uprising and a page full of comments...? No. Because this isn't the first time I've posted something on my Facebook page that involved a current event we should all be aware of. I've posted hundreds of current event type videos, articles, feeds, and rarely do they generate a response. From time to time, yes, a comment may come in from someone who took notice of my post, or maybe it was just a slow day on Facebook. However, nothing like the time I (facetiously) posted the question, "What's your favorite Richard Marx song?" That day will live on in infamy as either the busiest day on Facebook, or we don't want to be all that serious on Facebook and/or most people are disinterested with these types of posts, really aren't paying attention and just hope someone else is.
So what is Facebook for...? Well, of course the simple and apparent answer is social networking, Social probably meaning - enjoyable interaction, and Networking probably meaning - the act of meeting new people. Ask yourself that question and you may come up with a different answer. A very generic answer might simply be, whatever you put into it.
Well let me just say this...I've socialized and I've networked, but could I as a befriended individual on Facebook have possibly ventured into territory that needs subscription rather than a friend confirmation...? And were my reasoning's behind the responses to my Richard Marx question accurate...?
